Problems with mould & mildew are usually easy enough to deal with. Left untreated, however, a build-up of mould & mildew can cause major problems and even put your health at risk. That's why it should be tackled sooner rather than later.
Mould & mildew in the bathroom is the most common manifestation, although it can be found anywhere in the home, even in concrete foundations. It is very important to keep mould and mildew out of bathrooms and there are a number of ways to do this.
A preventative approach is, of course, ideal. Practical measures include drying off walls, floors and surfaces after showering or bathing, and maintaining good ventilation, for example, by leaving the door open after taking a bath or shower.
One of the easiest ways to prevent a build-up of mould and mildew is to equip your bathroom or shower room with an exhaust fan . If you don't have one already, it's a good idea to install one. Exhaust fans can also be installed with a timer, so that you can set them to run for a particular amount of time after you've had a shower.
If, however, you do encounter a minor case of mould or mildew in your bathroom there are some easy ways to treat it.
Using a solution of water mixed with some bleach and laundry detergent, you can clean off mould & mildew with a sponge. This will kill the mould & mildew, and once the wall is fully dry, you can rinse off with a clear water solution. If you are re-painting the walls, it is advisable to mix your paint with a mould & mildew inhibitor and some paints even contain this already.
Serious mould & mildew growth may require professional mould remediation and/or removal of the affected building materials.
